The CNA exam itself usually costs $50 to $150, on top of the training programme, which is the expensive part. Fingerprinting and background checks add another $30 to $80 in most states, and a retake costs the exam fee again.

The four costs

CostTypical rangeNotes
Training programme$300 to $1,500Often free through an employer or a public programme
State exam fee$50 to $150Paid once, and again on a retake
Fingerprinting and background check$30 to $80Required in most states
Prep materials$0 to $150Optional, and the only cost you control

The cost nobody budgets for: the retake

A failed written or skills attempt means paying the exam fee again and waiting three to six weeks for a slot. In lost wages alone, that is usually more than any prep course. The cheapest strategy is not the cheapest prep, it is passing the first time.

Can you get the training for free?

Yes, in many states. Nursing homes, home care agencies and some hospitals run free training in exchange for a work commitment. Workforce development programmes and community colleges also subsidise it. Ask before you pay a private school.

Is prep worth paying for?

Only if it changes your score. A $59 month of practice tests is worth it if it prevents one $100 retake and three weeks of waiting. A $300 course that repeats what your training already covered is not.

What is usually a waste of money

Printed workbooks you never open, "guaranteed pass" packages with no real refund, and any offer to take the exam for you. That last one is fraud and gets certifications revoked.

Is the CNA exam fee refundable?

Rarely. Some states refund part of it with a medical excuse and notice. Check your state board.

Does the employer pay for the exam?

Often, if you are already hired or have a commitment. Ask before registering.
